6. Hostile Waters (PC) (2001)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPrcJ7Zso4o Hostile Waters was released for the PC back in the FPS heavy days of 2001. A 3rd person vehicular action game with strategy elements, Hostile Waters failed to capture an audience - despite featuring the voice talents of Tom Baker. Madness. 2012: After a third world war destroys the majority of the world's infrastructure; the survivors set about rebuilding society. 2032: Earth is now a centrally-governed fully functioning Utopia (a scenario rarely visited in video games). This new found peace doesn't last and soon enough world peace is under threat from an unknown enemy. On the surface Hostile Waters appears to be your standard 'Blow everything that moves' action game. On that front, it doesn't disappoint. Action takes place across a variety of land, sea and air scenarios. Where the game really shines is with its story. Penned by famed DC comic book writer Warren Ellis, the heavy Sci-Fi plot is, to this day, one of the most powerfully well written stories ever committed to a video game. This makes the low sales figures all the more disappointing. Players who tire of modern clichéd video game story-lines will enjoy the deep fantasy to be found in Hostile Waters. Broad gameplay, engrossing characters and a deep story make Hostile Waters a truly underrated gem which sank without a trace upon its initial release.
