10 Awful Plot Twists That Completely Ruined Great Games

6. Metal Gear Solid 4 - Big Boss Is Still Alive. Again!

Lets get one thing out of the way. This list could be entirely Metal Gear Solid-related. More than any other game franchise, MGS seems to take wild and insane turns that rarely pay off. The bad guy is the President, Somehow Ocelot *becomes* Liquid Snake when he attached his arm, Metal Gear Solid 2 is a simulation designed to recreate Metal Gear Solid's conditions, and the less said about the ending of Metal Gear Solid 4, the better. So lets say a few things about the ending of Metal Gear Solid 4, specifically the idea that Big Boss is alive and fully capable of coherent thought, despite Snake supposedly killing him in "Metal Gear" and the fact we saw his body burned to a crisp midway through Metal Gear Solid 4 AND the fact the dude's 74 years old and is dressed as sharp as a Ginsu knife. This was the straw that broke the already frail camel's back. For every flight of fancy or logic defying twist the game asked you to take, this moment, this big reveal, was one too many. It's like finding out Darth Vader is Luke's Dad, and also a clone of an Ewok. Worse, Big Boss, like every other character in the game, is there only to provide exposition and wrap up the countless loose ends from the prior games in the most annoying way possible. He's also, literally, a Frankenstein, made from parts of Ocelot, Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake (from Metal Gear Solid 2) to 're-assemble' his body. Really. This is not something that happened in a fan-fiction write up, this is how they explain the 79 year old Big Boss is alive and well, and capable of kicking the crap out of Solid Snake if he so chooses. If this doesn't ruin any and all positive feelings a person had to this game's narrative, what does? Look, it's not like Metal Gear Solid had very much credibility left after bizarre mushroom trip that was Metal Gear Solid 4, but this final twist was so strange and so out of left field that it became impossible to take anything Metal Gear Solid did seriously again. A point emphasized by the next game where you fight a teenage girl in her underwear who's piloting a giant mech. Really.
