Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece for many reasons, but its true ending is what made it stick in the craw of everyone who played.

There are a few different ways the story can end, but the true ending sees James Sunderland finally confront his demons in the form of a monstrous version of his dead wife. The earlier twist revealing that James was the one who killed Mary is expanded on, showing that Mary's terminal illness was ravaging her body, reducing her to a shell of her former self. James killed her as humanely as he could, to spare his wife a much slower death.

The ending sees James and Laura, the only two survivors of the story, leaving together, followed by the full reading of Mary's last letter to James, read by her voice actress, Monica Taylor Horgan. A final monologue so heart-wrenching, that Horgan broke down sobbing multiple times during recording. And even in the final product, you can hear her just barely holding together.

Silent Hill 2 then ends on one of the most devastating final lines ever written: "James. You made me happy."
