1. Dom Dies (Gears Of War 3)

It all started with Mad World. Everything. The first, and most memorable, Gears of War trailer, often considered one of the best video game trailers of all time, featured the song. When Maria died in Gears of War 2, Dominic Santiago died with her.

Those who were paying attention had already pegged Dom to die when the first Gears of War 3 trailer was unleashed upon the world. At one point, he simply gives up in front of a Locust drone, only for Marcus to save his life. However, his actual sacrifice remains to this day the single most emotional and powerful moment in any of the Gears of War campaigns.

Surrounded by infected Lambent, Marcus and the others have no way out. So, with Maria in his heart, Dom makes the ultimate sacrifice. Driving a tank into a fuel station at full speed, Dom obliterates the Lambent forces - and himself.

However, it's just before that that Mad World starts to play. When you already know what's coming. When Marcus knows what's coming. It's a hugely powerful moment in video gaming and great pay-off for Dom's character, who managed to stay human in a game all about aliens.
