For this theory to hold any water at all, one has to accept the possibility that Jumpman - the character in the original Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. - isn't simply an early version of Mario, but actually the father of the iconic mascot and his brother, Luigi.

No problems with that? Okay, good, because this is where the theory starts to gain momentum. According to this seemingly bulletproof post on Reddit, after Jumpman rescues Pauline at the conclusion of Donkey Kong, he captures the overgrown ape and imprisons him, leading to the events of Donkey Kong Jr.

When you finally rescue your dear dad from the clutches of Jumpman in that game, he falls to the ground and a halo forms above his lifeless body clearly denoting that, yes, this dude is dead. No wonder Mario never talks about his father.
