It's simply impossible for this list not to include the single most iconic best bud in the history of platforming games - Sonic the Hedgehog's loveable fox sidekick, Tails.
Tails was introduced as a playable character for a second player in the 16-bit version of Sonic 2, and though he could've easily been a half-assed nothingburger of a sidekick merely intended to give everyone's younger sibling something to do, he swiftly won himself a loyal legion of fans.
Tails' lovely design, irrepressibly chirpy attitude, and starkly contrasted abilities from Sonic make him an invaluable asset, but more than that, he'll show up for Sonic any time he needs a helping hand.
Sonic's friendship with Tails is basically puddle-deep in the series' earlier games, though it's been expanded considerably across more than 30 years of new titles and other media in the wider Sonic universe - especially the new live-action films.
