10 Best New Male Video Game Characters Of The Decade
4. Atreus - God Of War
Following on from Joel's entry, Atreus is essentially the Ellie to Kratos' Joel. The obvious fact that Atreus is Kratos' biological child changes things, along with the fact that Kratos spends a good chunk of the game hiding Atreus' godhood from him. Though we knew all along that he was indeed a god, the revelation that he's in fact Loki was not one everyone saw coming.
The reveal is done in the best possible way, giving it the weight it deserves while suiting Kratos' matter of fact, stoic delivery. Atreus is not here off the back of just a single story twist though. He's a great character in his own right, and while some found his inclusion to be annoying, it certainly fit God Of War's more mature tone this time around.
Atreus has an adventurous, slightly mischevious side (as you might expect from Loki), but also has the discipline associated with being raised by Kratos. God Of War rebooted itelf back to more serious, grounded roots, and Atreus was perfect for that new angle.
Once he learns he's a god, it does go straight to his head and immediately makes him unpleasant, but that feels expected for a boy of his age.
