10 Best New Male Video Game Characters Of The Decade
3. Vaas - Far Cry 3
While he does land an impressive third place position here, many players would agree Vaas slightly squandered his potential. Set up as the major villain of Far Cry 3, Vaas ultimately meets his end well before the game's closure as it takes a hard left turn and leaves you with the option to kill your girlfriend in an island ceremony.
However, in his appearances prior to his death, he burns himself into the players psyche. Completely unhinged and therefore completely unpredictable, Vaas' 'definition of insanity' speech is one of the most powerful monologues in gaming. Psychopaths are nothing new in gaming, but Vaas has such an insidious sadism that slithers deep under your skin. Like Ramsay in Game Of Thrones, there's something darkly compelling about him.
It's also possible that Vaas' early death has helped his legacy. Its become pop culture trivia that his role is so short, and people’s disappointment over his limited appearance has made him more interesting as a result.
Far Cry did learn their lesson though, with central villain of Far Cry 4, Pagan Min, getting much more of the story. An entirely different breed of psychopath, the game pulls a gotcha by killing off Min's body double.
