Oxenfree is a perfect example of less is more.

It doesn't throw everything at you to inspire fear and engagement. Instead, it just gives you a brilliant visual style, some great conversational mechanics and a fantastic story that is told organically through gameplay. Gamers can be entertained - and scared - very quickly if those elements are handled correctly.

The title puts you in the shoes of Alex, a teenage girl who joins her friends on a weekend trip to a local island. However, instead of spending the nights partying, Alex and her stepbrother encounter a creepy dimensional rift and soon explore the mysterious island to uncover its secrets.

This narrative is filled with some excellent character development for Alex and hosts plenty of thought-provoking moments. While the game's scariness isn't the main focus, the atmosphere and supernatural aspects of the plot will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you feel nervous whenever you encounter something new.

It operates with a fascinating 2.5D art style that blends well with the macabre narrative and is an incredibly profound change of pace from the typical horror titles you see in the medium.
