4. Among The Sleep
Childhood can be a surprisingly frightening time, seeing as you are tiny and defenceless, with no real knowledge of the world. Among the Sleep truly takes advantage of this and invites you back into the powerless shoes of a young child, making you feel tiny in a daunting environment.
Among the sleep lets you play as a toddler called David. The game opens on your birthday and sees you interact with your mother until there is a knock at the door and she is called away.
She returns with a present and takes you upstairs to play. You open the gift and meet the sentient cuddly bear named Teddy. From there, you and your trusty friend search the house at night and avoid the monstrous presence of two nightmarish figures.
The narrative here is full of suggestive ideas, such as child neglect, trauma and a broken home, with the supernatural scares acting as a manifestation of this. It's a surprisingly well-established character study of a two-year-old, as, from his innocent perspective, trivial things become terrifying.
Overall, the creepy atmosphere and sense of powerlessness make you fully delve into the shoes of the young David, giving you a twisted look at the horrors of youth.
