10 Best Open-World Video Games Of 2017

2. Horizon: Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn

Sony's most valuable new IP of the generation so far, Horizon: Zero Dawn was a daring proposition for the company, moving the developers of the Killzone franchise away from first-person shooters and onto an ambitious open-world RPG.

Thankfully, although it doesn't add anything particularly new, Guerrilla Games' first attempt at a sandbox title perfects every mechanic the genre has pioneered over the past decade. Traversing the environment feels amazing, crafting is just deep enough to be rewarding without being overwhelming, and the combat is utterly satisfying.

The dystopian future Earth present in the game was intoxicating to explore and learn more about and, visually speaking, reached a spectacle and scale that no other sandbox game has come close to matching so far.

From the design of the setting to the exhilarating gameplay, Horizon isn't only one of the best open world titles of the year, but one of the best games of the generation.
