10 Best Silent Protagonists In Gaming History
5. Protagonist (Gris)
Gris is a game driven by sound, and while the wordless singing of our nameless protagonist does feature throughout, that’s not too different from the various grunts some other so called silent protagonists here.
Gris is one of the most beautiful games ever, with the artistic backgrounds slowly filling with colour as you return more light to the world. The soundtrack is wonderful too, subtle throughout then crescendoing just as it needs to. Our protagonist is beautifully drawn, with her spindly limbs, flowing coat and evocative facial expressions.
Gris is a less a game than it is a piece of art with puzzles attached, and the quietly contemplative protagonist is the perfect fit for that.
Throughout the game, there’s various challenges which tie into the five stages of grief our protagonist seems to be going through. Her silence played against the soft soundtrack and gorgeous art work draw you in much more than any long monologues might have. The protagonist’s silence and an almost complete lack of hints or direction leave you with a similar feeling of isolation.
Though several indie games have silent protagonists for convenience, Gris is one of the few that actually uses it to its advantage.
