10 Best Songs In The Tony Hawk's Games
4. Subculture - Styles Of Beyond
Another stellar song from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, Subculture actually comes from Terraform, an unreleased album by Los Angeles, CA hip-hop foursome Styles of Beyond.
Unlike most of the artists on this list (who were already popular prior to showing up in one of these games), Styles of Beyond were significantly underground and underknown around the turn of the century; hence, THPS 2 gave them a huge boost – leading to an eventual collaboration with Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda for his 2005 Fort Minor project – and for good reason.
Obviously, the back and forth chemistry between rappers Takbir “Tak” Bashir and Ryan “Ryu” Patrick Maginn is superb, with each one establishing an individual, well, style while also complementing the other’s segments. It’s full of crafty wordplay and gripping phrasing, too, as well as relentlessly inventive and entrancing production courtesy of Colton “DJ Cheapshot” Raisin Fisher and Jason “Vin Skully” Rabinowtiz.
Their collage of eerie psychedelia and repetitious beats balance Tak and Ryu’s personable verses terrifically, culminating in one of the game’s most entrancing and exciting offerings.
