With the series stuttering somewhat during the years after, it's easy to forget just how good some of those early to mid-2000s Smackdown titles were. When the series switched to the moniker of Smackdown vs Raw in 2004, some interesting nuances were added, such as the addition of clean and dirty tactics, mini-games within matches and voiceovers from real WWE talent.

It was that game's sequel, Smackdown vs Raw 2006, however, that perfected those additions, as well as throw in some great improvements that included a more varied and type-specific grappling system, a create-an-entrance mode, a fully 3D crowd, more voiceovers, the introduction of the Buried Alive match, a cage with a door (hey, it all counts!) and more potential match combinations than ever €“ over 100, in fact.

What really made SvR 2006 stand out as the best title in that particular run, though, was the hugely entertaining story mode, featuring angles specially written for the game and an impressive voiceover cast including the likes of John Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin and, most surprisingly, The Undertaker (whose ridiculous and brilliant in-game angle involving Eddie Guerrero nicking his urn is a personal fave, we won't lie).

Ultimately, SvR 2006 pretty much nailed everything it tried its hand at, with only the lack of variation within said story mode serving as a slight downpoint to what was otherwise an impeccable and fun as hell addition to the fold.
