Rockstar have been lavished with praise for their way with characters, and Red Dead Redemption offers quite possibly their greatest lineup yet.

From the swindling schemes of Nigel West Dickens to the bumbling antics of the perpetually-smashed Irish, there's no shortage of colorful personalities to liven up the proceedings. It's not all snake oil salesmen and stumbling inebriates though - with the likes of Mexican revolutionaries, legendary gunslingers, hygienically-challenged grave-robbers and possibly even the devil himself rounding out the game's cast.

Redemption's characters all serve as conduits for channeling the various themes explored by the game's narrative, and not a single one of them was utilized for anything less than maximum effect. The cast were fully-realized human beings with lives extending far beyond the game's narrative, and it's even possible to learn the fates of several characters long after completion.

Everybody's got a favourite, but chances are Redemption's characters have stuck with you in the years since it's release and it'll be a long time before Rockstar top these guys.
