10 Biggest Mainstream Misconceptions About Video Games

9. Gamers Are All Socially Awkward Dorks

This one is a classic, the long held belief that anyone who plays video games are socially awkward dorks, living in their parent's basement, spending all of their free time playing video games while all the cool kids are out being cool and like, having sex or something. This stereotype came around in the 80s when gaming was still a very nerdy pastime and for some reason it seems to have just stuck. The modern reality couldn't be further from the stereotype, though. These days anyone can be a gamer, not just the nerds with broken glasses. Just look at the celebrities who get involved with gaming and promotion, from professional footballers like Lionel Messi, cult icons such as Nathan Fillion and even music's mega-stars like Snoop Dogg all are avid gamers, helping promote games and events. Then consider the huge move there has been in the last few years towards casual gaming; the Wii became the console for the non-gamer, Angry Birds made gamers of nearly everyone without them realising and the 3DS is proving to be one of the most popular handheld devices ever made. Video games are for everyone going forward.

I am a man of many interests. I am a passionate gamer, running my own YouTube channel (The Gadget Addicts) showing off the best of modern gaming in the form of Let's Play videos. I am an ardent musician, having been a guitarist for the past 13 years. I am also a massive geek, I adore science fiction and fantasy films and TV shows and am trying to work up the courage to start writing a novel. If I can ever think of a good story to tell... I live with my wife in the North East of England and own a belligerent little black cat.
