10 Biggest Mainstream Misconceptions About Video Games

4. That Gamers Are All Male

Much like point nine, the whole world seems to think that gaming is the preserve of boys and men. While it's true that back in the day it was mostly boys playing with consoles and video games, the tide has turned now and the age of the "gamer girl" is now in full swing. Research has indicated that girls make up nearly 50% of what are referred to as "core gamers"; the players who are fanatical, refuse to accept casual gaming and generally are only concerned with kicking as much backside as possible. Things aren't all rosy in terms of gender equality though. The recent #GamerGate internet meltdown caused a backlash at misogynistic male gamers, hyper-militant female gamers and basically made a lot of people look incredibly bad. From female gamers making sweeping generalisations, to the male gamers making sexist and horrible comments, everyone missed the point that the whole thing was supposed to be about journalistic integrity within the games industry. There are problems that will need to work themselves out, but on the whole, it's getting close to true gender balance in the gaming world.

I am a man of many interests. I am a passionate gamer, running my own YouTube channel (The Gadget Addicts) showing off the best of modern gaming in the form of Let's Play videos. I am an ardent musician, having been a guitarist for the past 13 years. I am also a massive geek, I adore science fiction and fantasy films and TV shows and am trying to work up the courage to start writing a novel. If I can ever think of a good story to tell... I live with my wife in the North East of England and own a belligerent little black cat.
