10 Bleak Video Game Endings You Can't Escape From
4. Each Ending Showcases The Horrors Of War - Spec Ops: The Line
Spec Ops: The Line is a first-person shooter that tries to subvert the tropes of its genre by telling a more realistic story that doesn't glorify the military lifestyle.
For the most part, it means making the enemy soldier appear more human instead of turning them into faceless target practice. However, the biggest testament to how Spec Ops: The Line delivers an anti-war message is its series of progressively more depressing endings.
The game features three distinct finales that are dependent on how many people you've killed throughout the story. In the worst-case scenario, the constant violence turns your character, Walker, into a madman who shoots up the entire rescue team before going AWOL.
Now, you might think that the best ending will not be as bleak, seeing as you have to work for it by not committing too much violence.
However, in reality, your decision only causes Walker to have a different mental breakdown, which doesn't end up with the death of his fellow soldiers, yes, but leaves him severely scarred from all the horrors of war he witnessed in Dubai.
Either way, Walker is a wreck of a man. It's just the question of how much more misery he inflicts upon the world.
