10 Breathtaking Video Game Soundtracks You Need To Hear
4. God Of War
A full eight years after the last mainline instalment, titular God of War Kratos smashed back into the limelight in 2018's God Of War.
Winner of numerous Game Of The Year awards, the newest entry provided a revolutionary re-imagining of the series. It gave us us a much older and wiser Kratos this time around, as he traversed the realms of Norse mythology - unlike the Greek mythology of previous titles - with his son Arteus to scatter the ashes of their respective wife and mother.
Alongside its satisfying combat and slick one-shot presentation, a large part of what made this game stand out was its emotional narrative driven by an ensemble cast of complex characters. And at the heart of this was Bear McCreary's epic soundtrack.
Although it lost out on Best Score to Red Dead Redemption 2, the way McCreary explored these characters musically shouldn't be underestimated. Using just three notes as the basis of Kratos's theme, for instance, McCreary transformed the motif with different instrumentation and voicing to add further depth to the character as the game progressed.
To experience the power of God Of War's soundtrack, 'God Of War', 'Mimir', and 'The Summit' can provide a good snapshot of what to expect.
