10 Canceled Open-World Games You Wish They Hadn't Killed

4. Prey 2

Prey 2
Bethesda

Prey and its proposed sequel are kind of grey areas, as far as the open world aspect is concerned. The original game released in 2006, a sci-fi themed FPS/survival horror title centering around a young Cherokee who is captured by aliens alongside his grandfather and girlfriend. Science and spirituality collide, as a result of the protagonist’s heritage, and it’s a very unpredictable title.

The project had been in the works for some years, stalling and restarting several times along the way. The end product was very well received, to the extent that a reboot arrived on the scene just over a decade later. For the proposed sequel though, the publishers (Bethesda) were shooting for more of an open space, open-world vibe, but it wasn’t to be. Prey 2 wasn’t to be at all, in fact.

In the late noughties to mid-2010s, a lot of wrangling was taking place to try and make this happen, and it’s tough to say what exactly went wrong when Prey 2 was cancelled in 2014. All we know for sure is that this one had enormous potential, especially for its time.
