10 Canceled Open-World Games You Wish They Hadn't Killed
5. Star Wars: Project Orca
As we’ve seen several times already, pure ambition is often a major factor in condemning an open-world project to cancellation. Eight Days and The Flash’s potential title, with their city-hopping plans, just couldn’t be brought to life. Fantastic as they sounded, developers have to work within the constraints of technology.
The infamous Project Orca was, in part, another victim of this. Of course, the Star Wars franchise is one of almost boundless scope and reach, encompassing all manner of planets and solar systems by its very definition. An open-world title set in this universe is often going to be all kinds of impractical. Some of the best Star Wars titles ever, such as GameCube launch game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II - Rogue Leader, offer a series of missions focused around one big franchise set-piece.
Orca was set to offer the player the chance to journey to and around far-off planets, No Man’s Sky style, but was nixed (by EA again) in favor of work on a less sizable franchise entry that would require less development time and resources. A lot of things are up in the air at the moment, when it comes to Star Wars video games, so let’s see where the series will take us next.
