When it comes to the best games in a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is considered the incontestable champion. Though the rushed sequel wasn't on the same level, there was a high demand for another, since the prequel franchise was brimming with potential.

Although Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 was never formally announced, it entered pre-production soon after its predecessor's release. Based on the testimonies of the developer, Chris Avellone, this instalment would've had the protagonists from the previous instalments, Darth Revan and The Exile, facing off against an ancient Sith faction who had been manipulating major events in the galaxy behind the scenes.

Despite the fact KOTOR 3 sounded promising and followed one of the most critically acclaimed games ever made, LucasArts decided not to greenlight the project. Instead, they thought it was more logical to push for action-based games like The Force Unleashed. (Not exactly one of the smartest decisions the publisher ever made.)

Fittingly, there is a new hope. Though the KOTOR remake has suffered a tumultuous development, it's still set for release. If the reboot does well, it could reignite interest in Knights of the Old Republic 3, with Revan a continued source of intrigue for Star Wars fans even with the Disney canon.
