10 Darkest Bad Endings In Video Games
8. In Water (Silent Hill 2)
Silent Hill 2 is a game that banks on making you feel emotionally void and melancholic, balancing between terrifying and tear-jerking like a tightrope walker. The array of bittersweet endings certainly helps this, and the worst of them all is the "In Water" epilogue, an ending so downtrodden and saddening that it dives headfirst into pure hopelessness.
For those unaware, the game centres on James Sunderland, a man braving the horrors of the titular town after killing his terminally ill wife, Mary. The endings mostly revolve around his response to this grief, with some showing his acceptance of his past and desire to move on. But, this ending is about as hopeless as trying to defeat Pyramid Head with a butterknife, as it shows James fully succumbing to despair.
The "In Water" ending shows as James admits to Mary that while he loved her, part of him also hated her for "taking his life away," before accepting that he can't forgive himself for what he's done. So, he takes Mary's body, puts it in his car, and drives himself into Toluca Lake.
This may be a game that has joke UFO and Dog endings, but it also boasts one of gaming's most gut-wrenching finales.
