10 Darkest Bad Endings In Video Games
6. Helpless (Heavy Rain)
Heavy Rain is a dark, dark game that can result in some incredibly sombre outcomes for its ensemble cast, all of which have their own good and bad endings. Madison can have her insomnia and nightmares worsen, Norman can die of a drug overdose, and Scott can get away scot-free, allowing him to continue his killing spree. But when it comes to picking the absolute worst of the worst, you've got to turn your attention to Ethan, because, good god, the "Helpless" ending is pure misery.
This ending depicts Ethan in a prison cell, having been successfully framed as the Origami Killer. In his dank new abode, surrounded by Origami, he is overwhelmed by his inability to prove his innocence and his failure to save his son. So, having given in to the depression, he hangs himself in his cell. Oh boy, that is soul-destroying.
There's so much to hate about this ending, but perhaps the worst of all is the sheer injustice of it. Ethan went through so much in an effort to save his child, but now he's dying with the world believing he was a monster. It's hard to imagine any way it could have been worse for him.
