10 Darkest Bad Endings In Video Games
5. Ignorance Is Bliss (Persona 3)
Imagine, if you will, that someone tells you the world is going to end, giving you two options to respond. Option number one: you can try to fight back against the upcoming apocalypse. Option two: you can have your memory wiped and live in ignorant bliss until it happens. That's one hell of a horrible choice to have to make, and it's one that Atlus made players do with Persona 3.
This seminal RPG introduces you to the character of Ryoji, a transfer student who is eventually revealed to be the personification of Death, through rather convoluted means. Ryoji bears the tragic news that a monstrous entity known as Nyx is going to destroy the world, before offering you an out; kill Ryoji, and you'll forget this Dark Hour is coming. Pick this option and you'll watch as the characters live as regular high school students until the final hour.
While there have been other game endings that result in the destruction of the planet, there's something so dismal about this one. It's also all the worse given that the character of Aegis, a robot, remembers everything, watching on as her former friends hurtle toward extinction completely unaware.
