5. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Four months prior to the planned release of Modern Warfare 3, website Kotaku reportedly received leaks from multiple sources with a wealth of information relating to the game, which they unleashed upon the internet in May 2011.
Confirmed details described the game's story and its characters and showed off its concept art, as well as including an audio clip which hinted at the game's time period. Extensive details regarding MW3's multiplayer were leaked, right down to the exact number, names and locations of the maps to be included.
Activision responded very professionally. Instead of panicking, they threw up their arms in a shrug and decided to release a few other nuggets of information for their excited fanbase. What could have been seen as a huge marketing failure actually turned into a huge marketing win for them. Result!
