10 'Emotional' Video Game Endings That Fell Completely FLAT

It's strange how storytelling work. Sometimes the people involved can do an impeccable job, yet the resulting tale falls flat on its face. Case in point - the death of Aunt May.

First off, full respect must be paid to the actors and technical artists behind this scene. Peter Parker's deathbed goodbye to Aunt May is beautifully shot and acted, with Yuri Lowenthal and Nancy Linari putting award-worthy effort into voicing their respective characters. Unfortunately, their good work is undone by the fact that, for the player, May's death feels more like saying goodbye to a passing acquaintance than a loved one.

Put simply, Aunt May does not get enough screen-time for her death to make an impact. Across the game's 20-hour run-time, May only gets a handful of minutes as an on-screen presence. This, unfortunately, means we've barely got to know her before she departs. It's as if the writers thought the affection people have for Aunt May the comic book character would transfer over to her video game counterpart, but it doesn't. As a result, when May dies in the game it comes across as a pale shadow of her iconic death in the comics.

(Although the video game May at least stays dead, whereas the one in comics turned out to be an actress hired by the Green Goblin to mess with Peter. As good an indicator as any as to why Marvel nearly went bankrupt in the nineties...)
