Character redesigns aren’t always a bad thing but plenty of DMC fans were left with a bad taste in their mouth after spending time with the new and not-so-improved Dante of DmC: Devil May Cry. With a new look and a new attitude designed to appeal to a younger generation, this Dante got plenty of fans offside before the game even came out.

Even though the combat proved to be as satisfying as ever and this new Dante wasn’t without his fans, a lot of people decided this just wasn’t for them.

Plenty of players felt the redesign instructed by Capcom left Dante seem like he was trying way too hard to be cool and serious, and ultimately it all fell flat. Given that DmC is an origin story there is some amount of leeway in what they could get away with as far as the redesign but it left most fans feeling like they lost their favourite gothic and sarcastic protagonist in place of a wannabe facsimile.

If DmC wasn’t a Devil May Cry game it might not have gathered as much ire but it was so, Donte was born.
