Role playing games have brought us some of the most unforgettable experiences in all of media, from the vast, beloved fantasy worlds of Skyrim and The Witcher 3 to the dystopian sci-fi settings of Deus Ex and Cyberpunk 2077.
With the next generation of console hardware well underway, we are certainly in for a treat with some upcoming RPG projects. With stunning visuals, bigger worlds and faster loading times, we could be entering a new golden age of role playing.
Evidencing this is the Demon's Souls remake, which is one of the best looking games ever made, taking full advantage of the PS5 hardware. RPG elements are currently a trend in games and even long running franchises such as Assassin's Creed are implementing some of their core mechanics.
Whilst the genre has provided us with some critically acclaimed masterpieces in the past, let’s look at the exciting future of role playing games with some projects that are currently in development for the next generation of gaming.
Back in 2018, Bethesda announced Starfield, their first original property in over 20 years. During that time, Bethesda Game Studios has been crafting some of the most influential role playing games of all time between the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series.
Skyrim in particular proved to be a monster hit for the studio, which has displayed incredible staying power through community mods to still be relevant today. When Fallout 76 released in 2018 thoough, it was almost universally disliked for its buggy, unfinished state and underwhelming story elements. Many fans felt that Bethesda had lost touch with their audience and the company's overall reputation took a hit.
This is why Starfield is so exciting. A single player potential return to form, the new sci-fi, planet hopping RPG Starfield needs to get the fans back onboard the Bethesda rocket ship.
So far though, details have been scarce. In 2021 Starfield received a first look, in-engine trailer which did not feature gameplay but did set a release date for 11th November 2022. Todd Howard has since gone on to call Starfield 'Skyrim in space' which should definitely set expectations at stratospheric levels.
