10 Forgotten Nintendo 64 Gems You Need To Play In 2022
4. Ogre Battle 64: Person Of Lordly Caliber (1999)
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber boasts a title which reads like a terrible Japanese to English Google translation. Yet, despite the downright hideous name, it is one of the best RPG experiences available on a console which didn’t receive a whole lot of love from the genre.
One of the coolest things about this title is that it did the whole “butterfly effect” thing years before 2015’s Until Dawn, and it wasn’t even touted as the main mechanic of the game. Choices you make in Ogre Battle 64 really do affect the lives of some of the game’s NPCs and can greatly influence later events.
Unlike more typical RPGs, Ogre Battle 64 plays a bit more akin to a hexagonal-tiled conquest-focused experience like the Sid Meier's Civilization games. Players can’t control battles directly, though they can direct their units and hope to gain an advantage in the grand scheme of things.
A unique take on the genre and a true standout in the Nintendo 64 library of games, Ogre Battle 64 really is a must play for retro strategy fans.
