10 Gaming Characters Who Never Deserved To Die

7. Assassin's Creed - Desmond Miles

NN-Desmond-Miles

Desmond Miles was just a bartender in New York City, minding his business, when BOOM! He was kidnapped by the Templars.

In the canon of Assassin's Creed, Desmond Miles is the descendant of a long, long line of Assassins, a guild of stealthy mercenaries that kills to keep the world in order. Over time, understandably, their proficiency at their work has made them plenty of enemies, none more substantial than the Templars, the legendary Knights who in modern times, are a large, well-financed organization intent on finding the Pieces of Eden, holy artifacts which they plan to use for nefarious means.

Abducted and placed within the confines of Abstergo Labs, Desmond is connected to the Animus, a machine that uses him to read the memories of his ancestor, Altair, before he is broken out by Lucy, a confidant and Assassin guild member under cover. Relocating to Italy, Desmond is hooked up to an upgraded version of the Animus, which allows him to see the memories of his ancestor Ezio, while simultaneously honing Desmond's skills from an ordinary bartender to a VERY talented Assassin. Over time, he unites with the modern-day assassin's against Abstergo and the Templars, as the typical everyman who was handed a majestic fate... and an even greater death.

At the game's end, the main antagonist is Juno, a member of the First Civilization, a being with god-like powers who wishes to subjugate the Earth to her rule. However, she cannot - she is contained and can only be released with the aforementioned Pieces of Eden. But... in typical fashion of things not being nearly that easy, Desmond NEEDS to use the Pieces to save the Earth from an impending Solar Flare that will nearly exterminate the Earth. If that happens, few humans will be left alive, but Desmond will be viewed as a savior and humanity will eventually return, renewing the cycle of savior and civilization development. However, opting not to erase humanity's chance of survival, Desmond instead chooses to save the Earth with the Pieces - which releases the malevolent Juno as a result.

The core of the Assassin's Creed series is stealth, and of course, death. I mean... death is literally the business of the Assassins. But Desmond was just an ordinary man (although not genetically ordinary) who was faced with a divine ordeal, and forced to endure death just to give his race a fighting chance - a hell of a dilemma to give someone.
