10 Gaming Franchises You Didn't Realise Are Still Around

Warcraft III was a critical and commercial success, influencing the RTS genre and spawning Dota, which in turn birthed the online battle arena genre. Just when it looked like the series had peaked, World of Warcraft revolutionised the MMORPG space. Blizzard's cash-cow has earned approximately $10 billion in revenue, had 100 million accounts, and hit over 12 million subscribers back in its heyday.

Even though there was a time where Warcraft seemed invincible, it went into a major slump during the 2010s. After the failure of the 2016 film adaptation and the overwhelming hatred towards Warcraft III: Reforged, it seemed the once unstoppable property was on the way out. As a result, only a fraction of Warcraft gamers are still playing it.

Having said that, a fraction of 12 million players is still a lot of players. As of 2025, World of Warcraft brings in over a million users daily, meaning it's still the top MMORPG by a significant margin.

Blizzard has also released at least one Warcraft property since 2018, whether it's an expansion, a re-release, or a remaster. And with more expansions, Midnight and The Last Titan, in the pipeline, the chances of Warcraft vanishing into obscurity in the foreseeable future is close to zero.
