20 Video Games That LIED (And Got Away With It)
These video games all have something in common: They lied to our faces, and we forgave them.
Sometimes, video games have a strange way of winning us over.
Some games don't always play it straight, and can occasionally pull the wool over our eyes to spectacular effect. Whether it's a plot twist you never saw coming, a marketing campaign that completely mislead you on what the game actually is, or a straight up genre-switch mid-way through, there are plenty of instances where developers have lied to our faces.
Some of the very best, however, have been able to not only deceive us, but actually get away with it. By the time the credits rolled on these 20 entries, players will have at the very least forgiven the lies, or in the best case scenario, actually agreed that the lies made the overall experience even BETTER.....
20. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
After the roaring success of Metal Gear Solid when it launched on Sony's maiden PlayStation console, fans were eager to see how the series would harness the power of the PS2 with a sequel, titled Sons of Liberty. The protagonist, Solid Snake, was already a cult hero, and with the bandana-toting master of stealth front and centre of the sequel's marketing campaign, many couldn't wait to see what he would get up to next.
The game's opening sequence, which was also playable as a demo, sees Snake infiltrating a huge oil tanker using brand new stealth mechanics that got fans even more excited for the full release. It came as something of a shock, then, when he was completely sidelined in favour of a brand new protagonist called Raiden. This youthful-looking, blonde-haired soldier was absolutely NOT what fans were expecting, and there was plenty of initial backlash at the fact he replaced Snake as the playable protagonist for the remainder of the game. What made it worse was that Konami had actually edited Snake into trailer footage for segments of the story that he wasn't even in, frustrating fans even more.
That being said, the overall package proved to be so good, that eventually, fans came around to the situation. While Raiden himself has never been able to match Solid Snake's popularity with the audience, they definitely warmed to him over time, and eventually he even got to star in another spin-off titled Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Hideo Kojima's incredible technical achievement ensured that MGS2 still went down as a massive success, despite blatantly lying to us all throughout the marketing campaign.
