Released in 2015, Undertale subverted so many of the game industry's established principles and was a real breath of fresh air for many long-time RPG players, offering the opportunity to talk your way out of fights and even form friendships with your enemies, as well as being filled with amusing dialogue and memorable characters.

Toby Fox is the man we have to thank for this indie masterpiece. Not only did he design the game in its entirety, he also composed Undertale's excellent soundtrack too. Fox used crowdfunding site Kickstarter to gain support for the game. He only aimed to raise about $5,000 but ended up with ten times that amount after word spread about his 'friendly RPG' idea.

Inspired by games like Earthbound, Mother, and the Mario & Luigi series, Fox set out to make an RPG with a unique battle system and a fun, colourful style. Essentially, he designed a game he would have loved to play, free of backtracking, grinding, and needless fetch quests, as well as ensuring that the game's difficulty was just right to provide a challenge without being too hard. His development of Undertale is the perfect example for budding designers to follow.
