10 Great Video Games Made By Just One Person
3. Cave Story
Boasting old-style graphics, a catchy chiptune soundtrack, adorable characters and addictive gameplay, Cave Story successfully captured the joys of classic 8-bit action platformers, and one guy made it all in his spare time.
This 2004 release is still popular to this day, being re-released for the Nintendo Switch just last year, and is often cited as the prime example of what individual independent developers can be capable of.
The game was made by Daisuke Amaya. He was still a college student when he started work on the game and added to it piece-by-piece over the years as a pet project, even while working full-time as a developer. Amaya later revealed that he made up a lot of the game's ideas and story as he went along, and was inspired by some of his favourite childhood titles like Castlevania and Metroid, as well as looking to iconic characters like Mario when designing his game's hero.
