10 Hidden Dialogues In Video Games
2. Debugging Hell - Final Fantasy VII (1997)
Video games as huge and ambitious as those of the Final Fantasy series were always going to include some weird and wonderful extra content for us to sniff out. In this case, however, it's unclear whether or not players were meant to find what they did.
Your first thought is no, since this hidden room in Final Fantasy VII is quite clearly a debugging tool for developers to quickly get to different points in the game. But then when you investigate a little deeper, things start to go in a really otherworldly direction.
Firstly, the giant Aerith you come across will let out a scream heard elsewhere in the game, then present you with a list of areas to warp to. All of these options correspond to in-game locations...except one: "To Hades!"
We know Hades as the Greek god of the Underworld, but some interpretations also treat the name as synonymous with Hell itself. When you choose this option, Aerith will laugh and say:
"Silly... Didn't anyone tell you? This IS Hades."
Assuming the latter meaning is correct, is she saying this debug room is Final Fantasy's version of Hell?!
Man, that's a creepy thought. Who knows if the developer that programmed this interaction ever thought anyone would see it...
