5. Wolfenstein Youngblood

Following in the footsteps of the 2017 epic Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus was never going to be easy. New Colossus had a brilliant story, punctuated by brilliant characters and fantastic gameplay that perfectly married difficulty with dual-wielding shotguns like a maniac. If Youngblood could capture some of that magic, we were in for a good time.

What players were met with was a noticeable step backwards in the franchise. Youngblood mixed up the formula by making the UI and gameplay feel more like a shared-world shooter, with levelled enemies and numbers popping up over their heads. This immediately killed the core gameplay. No longer was the focus on the fluidity of movement, and thinking of great ways to take enemies down. Now, some enemies were mere fodder, whilst higher levelled super soldiers were just bullet sponges that were not satisfying to destroy.

The problems didn't stop there, our new protagonists felt lifeless and devoid of character (impressive given that their father is William "B.J." Blazkowicz), the ensemble cast lacked any spark and there were no upgraded weapons or mechanics. Just the same assets as New Colossus without the joy.

It should be fun killing Nazi's. Youngblood was just not fun.
