10 Highest-Rated Video Games On Metacritic - Ranked
1. The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Metacritic Score: 97
Ocarina of Time might have revolutionised the industry and made an entire generation feel humbled as the hero of Hyrule, but Breath of the Wild takes those core explorative lessons and revolutionises them for an entirely new audience.
Ostensibly embodying the more open template of the original 1986 Zelda, BotW sets you as an amnesiac Link looking to recover his memories and skills, all the while discovering how he fits into the in-world Legend of Zelda story the townsfolk love so much. Such a supremely clever narrative then lets you take as long as you like exploring the gorgeous world, getting better as a fighter, hunter, climber and battle-hardened tactician.
It creates a sense of naturalism behind the game's various goals that doesn't come from various goals plastered onscreen or thousands of map markers to hoover up. Instead, Breath of the Wild lets you uncover its world at your own pace - just like we did back in '86, 98 or any other time. Except now, you have one of the best sets of third-person action controls in gaming history.
When alls said and done you'll have gone from pawing at the game's various systems and taking down Bokoblins with a tree branch, to soaring through the air on the back of a breeze conjured from fire, triggering slow-motion and headshot'ing an entire platoon of high-rank enemies before finishing off any stragglers with your fully-powered Master Sword.
You'll do all of this of your own accord, with just the right amount of nudging from the invisible gaming hand that is Nintendo. Breath of the Wild is a modern reminder of why we game in the first place, and for that, has an immortal charm that'll only age with grace.
