A series which began back in 1984, and has since produced six sequels and a reboot, A Nightmare on Elm Street is perhaps the single most influential, and renowned horror franchise on the planet. The sequels were a mixed bag, but the original is still regarded as one of the most standout examples of the slasher genre, inspiring countless filmmakers with its gruesome visuals, practical effects and imaginative storytelling.

Written and directed by Wes Craven, and staring Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund and John Saxon, A Nightmare on Elm Street follows a group of teenagers in the fictional town of Springwood, as they are stalked in their dreams by a mysterious, omnipotent figure with seemingly limitless capabilities: Freddy Kruger. Unable to sleep, the teenagers are tasked with finding a way to defeat Freddy, because if they die in their dreams, they die in reality.

The Game: A Nightmare on Elm Street is about dreams, so exploring dreams should be the central concern of the game. Freddy is able to manifest himself in many forms, and his environment is usually moulded on the deepest fears of his victims. Thus, you can pretty much take the game in any direction, because the source material is so incredibly versatile.

Travelling through dreams, and battling Freddy in multiple forms should form the crux of the game. After all, there’s limitless potential in an antagonist who can literally manipulate your surroundings, and alter your perceptions of reality.

Freddy Kruger is also a fascinating character with an interesting backstory, so providing Robert Englund will agree to reprise the role, there’s almost no way A Nightmare on Elm Street wouldn’t make for a fantastic game.
