10 HUGE Video Game Cliffhangers That Meant NOTHING
5. Mantorok Lives - Eternal Darkness
In Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Alexandra Roivas discovers her grandfather's tome, which details a group of cosmic entities called The Ancients. By taking control of 12 characters over a span of 2,000 years, you must stop the dark vessel, Pious Augustus, from unleashing these Ancients upon the world. The Ancient of Earth, Mantorok, assists you in your travels by teaching you how to wield Magick.
Depending on what decisions you make, Pious will summon one of three Ancients in the showdown - Chattur'gha, Ulyaoth, or Xel'lotath. But by performing a counter-spell, Pious' deity will be destroyed in the final battle. If you play the game three times on the same save file and vanquish all three Ancients, you will be rewarded with a secret ending.
In this scene, we learn Mantorok manipulated you and many others to eliminate his competitors. With no more Ancients to stand in his way, the Lovecraftian creature plots its next move.
Although this implies Mantorok will serve as an antagonist in a future instalment, Eternal Darkness 2 has suffered in development hell for two decades, meaning this intriguing teaser received zero pay-off.
