Why It Could Release In 2022

The long-awaited sequel to Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice was announced at The Game Awards 2019, and though it was clearly in the earlier stages of development, we're now two-and-a-half years on.

The gameplay reveal at last year's Game Awards certainly suggested a highly polished slice of a game in a deep level of production, enough that Hellblade II could very well end up making the cut before the end of 2022.

Why It Might Not

This one's a bit of a dice roll, honestly. For starters, with Microsoft releasing Starfield in November they might prefer to release Hellblade II next year to avoid them cannibalising one another.

But more basically, we just don't really know how far development is along. In June 2021, director Tameem Antoniades indicated that it was still in a fairly basic state, and three years from announcement to release isn't a massive amount of time for a AAA game these days.
