10 Incredible Games With Only ONE Mechanic
3. The Hole (Donut County)
For some people, the idea of being swallowed up by a hole in the ground is a nightmare beyond compare. But, as the indie world of gaming often likes to do, there's a game out there that turns the idea into a charming adventure. Enter Donut County.
This offbeat, irreverent title takes place in the titular county, a cute land full of anthropomorphic animals, including a raccoon called BK. Still, while things look adorable, the residents aren't doing too well, as BK has been using an app to "deliver donuts" to everyone, which in reality has sent holes to swallow up them and their homes.
The story continues in this goofy vein, but the gameplay is where the title really shines.
Each level starts with you controlling a small hole and swallowing items up. As you do so, the hole grows bigger, with the level ending after you've eaten all you can. Despite being an incredibly simple mechanic, the game never runs out of steam, as enough puzzles and challenges are added to keep you stimulated. Plus, the simple act of swallowing things is satisfying as hell.
