10 Incredible Video Games That Never Existed
4. Mega Man Universe
Announced in 2010, and inspired predominantly by Mega
Man 2, Mega Man Universe would have allowed players to create their own unique stages,
and share those stages with friends over Xbox Live and PSN. The game was being developed
by Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune, and would have allowed players to
customise their own characters, unlock special abilities and equipment, and
even redesign existing stages.
Essentially the Mega Man equivalent of Mario Maker, the game was cancelled in 2011 because of ‘various circumstances’. In reality, Capcom has demonstrated little interest in the blue bomber for as long as can be remembered. Following Keiji Inafune’s departure from the company, both Mega Man Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe were cancelled. In all likelihood, Inafune was the one man keeping the franchise, as well as the character alive.
While Mega Man Universe represented a huge departure for the series, and received a fair amount of criticism for its unfamiliar visual style, the game had a huge amount of potential.
Like Mario Maker, MMU might have been infinitely enjoyable, seeing as how it involved players creating their own challenges, and essentially entertaining themselves. It would have been the perfect send-off for the character and the series, but Capcom had other ideas.
