10 Incredible Video Games That Should've NEVER Worked

1. Papers, Please

Papers Please
Lucas Pope

If I came into the office (or other hypothetical workplace) and told you to play a game that lets you be an immigration officer, you'd think I was mad.

Admittedly, I'd probably do the same, were it the other way around.

On paper, this sounds like an awful concept.

Sitting in a booth all day, stamping entry papers and turning away anyone that looks funny, or looks at you funny? Woo...

But sometimes it's nice to be proven wrong. Lucas Pope struck proverbial gold with this one (and then oil with his second effort, The Return of the Obra Dinn).

It's amazing how much detail has gone into Papers, Please as you tussle with your conscience more than one should in a game that looks so basic.

It starts of easily enough, but then the weight of your choices starts to get heavy as time progresses. Is this person genuine, are they trying to blag asylum... or are they going to bomb the embassy?

The choices that you make are staggering for a game that has a smaller colour palette than the Soviet Union.
