The original Assassin's Creed centres around Desmond Miles - a descendent of several members of the Assassin Brotherhood. When The Templar learn of Desmond's heritage, they jack him into the Animus - a machine that taps into the genetic memories of the host's ancestors, allowing them to discover the Brotherhood's secrets.

Because Assassin's Creed was planned as a trilogy, Desmond was suitably killed off in the third entry's climax. But when Ubisoft saw how lucrative the series had become, they couldn't stop churning out sequels and spin-offs.

Even though Desmond is very dead, fans still wondered if he would make a reappearance. Since the recent instalment have explored resurrection technology, fans were hoping the developers would find a way to reincorporate Desmond.

Well, after eight years and seven sequels, fans got their wish.

In Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, it's revealed that Desmond exists in a digital afterlife, where he's known as The Reader. In his new form, he can read the "strands of time", allowing him to find a reality which best suits mankind.

Although this plot point is laid bare, many gamers missed it since, well, Valhalla's trophy and achievement completion percentages are VERY low.

Because Desmond Miles has been absent for almost a decade, it would've been easy to remove him from the modern games entirely. As such, long-time fans appreciated how the developers found a way to bring him back.
