It took Konami 14 cracks of the whip before it created the perfect Castlevania game, but Symphony of the Night was worth the wait.

There’s a certain irony to one of the greatest PS1 games being a 2D platformer in a 3D age, yet this vampire-slaying classic blazed a trail by kicking it old school.

Despite retaining the side-on viewpoint, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was a departure for the long-running series, switching the action to a vast, Metroid-esque environment and forcing players to seek out new powers to explore areas that were previously on lockdown.

The monsters were memorable, the level layouts inventive and that orchestral score sent shivers down the spine.

Few games have aged as well as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the title that convinced the world mid-90s technological advancements would never drive a stake through the heart of traditional 2D.
