10 Major Missteps By Video Game Companies

5. A Bizarre Marketing Strategy - Battlefield V

Warcraft 3
EA

Battlefield 5 is the first game on our list to be fully functional and enjoyable from day one.

While not as impressive as previous entries in the franchise, and somewhat lacking in content, it was a solid multiplayer experience. So how did the game end up being considered one of EA's commercial disappointments?

In what became a controversial move, EA focused their marketing around the depiction of female soldiers on the front line. Being women are rarely shown in these positions, many thought the game had an "unrealistic" edge - especially when combined with swords and spiked batons. Between being angry about the "inaccuracy" and wondering just what was actually new this time, it didn't make for a clear message.

The strategy connected with no one, and lead many fans to realise early on the game was lacking content, and that EA was attempting to draw attention away from this.

The situation left those on the fence about the game to looking elsewhere for their shooter needs, and sales suffered.
