10 MORE Video Game Villain Turns You Never Saw Coming

3. Edelgard - Fire Emblem 3 Houses

It's hard to call anyone in Fire Emblem: Three Houses a villain, because of the way the story is presented with multiple routes, your ability to bond with almost all of the characters, and the fact that most of them have the tried and true tragic backstory. Nope, wait, Those Who Slither In The Dark - yeah those guys are definitely assholes.

Which brings us to literally tortured Edelgard von Hresvelg, princess and heir of the Adrestian Empire. It doesn't take much to learn she is the last survivor of nine children because TWSITD experimented on her family. In exchange for greater power, she has had to watch her siblings die and has had her lifespan significantly shortened.

Certainly if you pick any of the storyline routes besides hers, the Black Eagles, she inevitably becomes one of the final antagonists of the game and is the focal point of one of the games' more brutal, emotional boss battles. But even in her own story route, she's still got a villain turn.

That's because she is also gallivanting around as the Flame Emperor, the leader of the first few sets of enemies you fight and one of the major servants of TWSITD.

Makes her seem slightly less sympathetic when she offers condolences for your father's death, knowing her colleagues were the ones who caused it.
