10 Most Controversial South Park Moments
6. Difficulty
South Park’s two most recent video game adaptations, The Stick Of Truth and The Fractured But Whole, are unusually good gaming spin offs. Much of this is down to the hands-on involvement of Parker and Stone, who have ensured that South Park’s essence is maintained in an interactive format.
One of the best examples of this is the difficulty mechanic. At the beginning of the game, you’re prompted to create your playable character - the game will become harder the darker you set the character’s skin. Playing as a non-white character makes it more difficult to earn money, and changes the way some of the non-playable characters in the game interact with you.
It’s not exactly the most subtle piece of commentary from the South Park team, but it’s certainly effective. The design of your avatar had aesthetic effects in The Stick Of Truth - primarily racy dialogue from Eric Cartman - but the decision to make the game far more difficult for those playing as a black character is one that could easily have backfired on the creators, though for the most part it seems to have been recognised as sharp satire.
