Gears Of War may be filled with the toughest, grittiest soldiers in the gaming world, and the series is renowned for being a total bro-fest, but more than a few tears were shed when one of the franchise's most likeable and witty characters, Dominic 'Dom' Santiago, sacrificed himself to save the rest of his squadmates.

Delta Squad is being overrun by Locust and Lambent forces when Dom spots a vehicle and huge gas tanker nearby. He quickly realises that the only way to give his friends a chance of survival is to crash the truck into the tanker and sacrifice himself in a huge explosion.

It's a really moving scene as we see Dom boldly driving to his doom and saying his goodbyes to his best pal, Marcus Fenix, who pleads with him to stop. Dom had been around since the first moments of the very first game and was a much-loved character, so it was a real shock to see him go out in such dramatic and unexpected fashion.
